‘BRIGHTON LINE' – CLASS OF ‘59
‘Brighton Line' is the number 59 in bingo parlance. Roland Perrin’s “Heaven on Earth” was written specially for this concert which will mark three of our foremost composers who were born in 1959; Roland Perrin, Jonathan Dove and James MacMillan.
The programme also includes work by Benjamin Britten and Orlando Gough.
HEAVEN ON EARTH by ROLAND PERRIN
“Both Billie Holiday and Lester Young died in 1959. My piece is a response to the fact that they both died then. The work is in two parts. The first part is a response to my feelings about Billie Holiday and the second is my response to Lester Young. In the background of the whole thing is a covert tipping of the hat to the great pianist Teddy Wilson. The words are by the little known Jewish American writer PD Nalor.
The first part is called “The Moment, The Song”. This is like a secular jazz hymn, meditating on the soulfulness of the great singer. The second part is called “Pre-bop”. This rides on the coat tails of the waves of swing rhythm that Lester Young created.” (Roland Perrin, December 2008)
“Heaven on Earth” follows a previous collaboration, “Songs from the Cage”, between Roland Perrin and David Temple’s Crouch End Festival Chorus.
